Overview

Courtland L. Bovée is a business communication educator, textbook author, and educational innovator who has spent more than three decades shaping how college students learn to communicate in professional settings. In partnership with John V. Thill, he is the coauthor of Pearson’s Business Communication Today and Excellence in Business Communication—two of the most widely adopted business communication textbooks in higher education—works that together have introduced millions of students to the principles and practices of effective business communication. He’s also the coauthor of Business in Action, and Introduction to Business textbook published by Pearson.

Education

Bovée’s academic preparation reflects a sustained commitment to business and education. He earned an Associate of Arts in Business from Shasta College (1963–1964), followed by a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of North Dakota (1964–1966). He subsequently completed a Master of Science in Business Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (1966–1968), a credential that directly informed his long career as a classroom instructor and pedagogical innovator. He’s completed additional graduate-level courses at the University of California, San Diego.

Teaching Career

Before transitioning to full-time authorship, Bovée spent 22 years as a professor of business communication at Grossmont College in San Diego, California, where he earned teaching honors and held the C. Allen Paul Distinguished Chair. That tenure grounded his textbook work in direct classroom experience, giving him an intimate understanding of how students learn—and what instructors need—that continues to distinguish the Bovée & Thill titles.

Professional Work and Current Focus

Today, Bovée serves as president of Bovée & Thill LLC, the firm through which the Bovée & Thill textbook brand and its growing suite of instructional resources are developed and managed. He’s active in the Association for Business Communication and the Text and Academic Authors Association. He also serves as chairman of the Neurogenesis Learning System, reflecting his deep engagement with educational neuroscience and the science of how people learn. This interest has given rise to his creation of the NeuroOptimized Learning™ framework, a pedagogical approach that integrates findings from cognitive neuroscience into business communication and Introduction to Business instruction.

Bovée is also recognized as a pioneer in AI-integrated business communication education. The most recent editions of the Bovée & Thill titles—including Business Communication Today, 16th Edition and Excellence in Business Communication, 15th Edition—have been substantially redesigned to address the role of artificial intelligence in contemporary professional communication, treating AI not as a peripheral topic but as a core dimension of how business communication is practiced today.

Areas of Expertise

Bovée’s publicly recognized areas of expertise include business communication, Introduction to Business, social media and digital communication, mobile business communication, intelligent technologies and AI in the workplace, educational neuroscience, and his creation of NeuroOptimized Learning™. His work spans both the content of business communication and the pedagogy through which it is taught, a dual focus that has made the Bovée & Thill titles consistently distinctive in the market.
