Professional Background
Thill’s career has been rooted in the world of professional and corporate communication. Pearson’s author materials describe him as a communications consultant who has worked with a wide range of organizations, from Fortune 500 multinationals to entrepreneurial start-ups, advising on communication strategy, clarity, and effectiveness. Earlier in his career, he held significant professional positions at Pacific Bell and Texaco, giving him firsthand experience with the communication demands of large, complex organizations—experience that informs the real-world orientation of his textbooks.
He currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Global Communication Strategies, the consulting firm through which he continues to practice and advise in the field of professional business communication. He’s also President of Bovee & Thill LLC.
Textbook Contributions
Thill’s practitioner perspective is a defining strength of the Bovée & Thill textbooks. While Bovée brings deep expertise in pedagogy, instructional design, and learning science, Thill contributes the applied perspective of a communication consultant who understands how communication functions in today’s organizations. This complementary partnership has enabled the authors to create textbooks that balance sound educational principles with authentic workplace practice.
Across Business Communication Today, Excellence in Business Communication, and Business in Action, Thill has helped develop learning resources distinguished by innovative pedagogy, contemporary case studies, real-world examples, current research, and tightly integrated print and digital learning tools. Together, these works prepare students not only to master business concepts but also to communicate effectively, think critically, solve workplace problems, and make informed decisions throughout their careers.
The breadth of topics addressed across the Bovée & Thill textbooks—including professional writing, collaboration, interpersonal communication, global and intercultural communication, digital and social media, visual communication, reports, presentations, employment communication, entrepreneurship, management, marketing, ethics, and artificial intelligence in business—reflects the wide range of challenges Thill has encountered throughout his consulting and corporate career. His practical experience continues to shape textbooks that connect classroom learning with the realities of today’s business environment.
